Configuring a Windows 2003 server for the first time with 'Active Directory'
I named the domain mydomain.local just to explore the differences from Win2k.
I decided to go with 2003 and found that I could change the domain name to a
FQDN by demoting this primary server, changing the name to
myregistereddomain.net and reconfiguring Active Directory. What I did not do
before configuring AD is remove the original DNS role. When I configured AD
everything seemed to be fine, but when I check the DNS it needed to be
reconfigured as well. I used the wizard to configure the DNS and it looked
like I was set. The newly defined domain is working.
However, their seems to be some objects remaining from the mydomain.local
configuration that I need removed. The event log shows Netlogon error event
ID 5781, with a description about dynamic registration of records associated
with domain mydoman.local failed. I used (nltest /dsderegdns:mydomain.local)
and rebooted the server. Now I get a few more 5781's with references to Zones
and Forests failing. I also now get a DNS error event ID 4007 saying that the
DNS server was unable to open the mydomain.local zone.
Specifically:
The DNS server was unable to open zone msdcs_mydomain.local in the active
directory from application directory partition ForestDNSZones. The DNS server
is configured to optain and use information from the directory for this zone
and is unble to load the zone without it. Check that the active directory is
functioning properly and reload the zone.
and:
The DNS server was unable to open zone mydomain.local in the active
directory from application directory partition DomainsZones. The DNS server
is configured to optain and use information from the directory for this zone
and is unble to load the zone without it. Check that the active directory is
functioning properly and reload the zone.
How can I get rid of the old zone information? The DNS and Active Directory
management consoles show nothing but the appropriate domain information. And
the new zone is working fine.
Any help would be appreciated.
