DC Crashed - Now Having Master Role Problems

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hey guys,

Here's a little background on the network I am running. I've got 3 Servers,
all running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition and two of the three are
Domain Controllers. Late last week one of our techs decided to check for
updates and found that there were a few waiting. He installed all the
updates, including SP1, then restarted. After the computer was down for more
than 10 minutes I get a call from him stating that it's down. I went to the
server room first thing the next morning, since authentication for web logon,
and DNS were still functioning, and found the computer in an infinite loop
restarting giving me a blue screen about how the registry had been corrupted.
I tried everything I knew of to get it up long enough to at least restore
the registry or roll back the updates, all to no avail.

Now for the problem...

After formatting and reinstalling the OS, I ran all the necessary Windows
Updates, including SP1, and restarted, everything was normal. I then ran
dcpromo to promote the machine to a domain controller, giving it the same
name and IP address. I knew that since it was the original DC, that I had
lost the Global Catalog, no big deal, but I didn't anticipate the problems
with the master roles. After the weekend I went to create some new users and
groups and kept getting errors saying that the RID Server could not be
reached. No relitive ID = no new users or groups. I haven't had a lot of
experience with moving the Master Roles, but I do remember that you should
only seize the roles if you don't plan to bring the crashed DC back onto the
network.

Any help on this topic would be great. I've been scratching my head for two
days now.

Thanks,
