If this stand-alone server is the only server, then promoting it to a domain
controller will preserve the user accounts (they'll be upgraded/ migrated
from the SAM to the NTDS).

The profiles should be OK too. If they're not, it's just a matter of
changing the permissions on the folders for the domain accounts...
