Problems with connecting to ADAM

Hi Guys (Dmitri, Lee, Joe B. Kaplan et al):

I am using ADAM in an application that I am developing. All had worked
fine. I came off this part of the project for a while and when I
switched back I was unable to connect to the ADAM instance. I used ldp
to connect and noticed that ldp hung at "Retrieving base DSA
information". I proceeded to install a new ADAM instance. This time the
installation hung and after some 5 minutes informed me that I needed to
provide proper credentials to import the ldf files (ms-user and
ms-inetorgperson); even after I provided my administrator credentials
the installation continued hanging. I had to forcibly stop the
installation. I then tried stopping the original ADAM service (within
Windows services). That failed to stop in a timely fashion. Then I
tried deleting the instance through the Control Panel 'Add/Remove
Programs': again that hung and then later informed "Removal wizard was
not able to remove all of the components ... An LDAP connection could
not be established with the directory service". One of the other errors
I got was "wizrd could not authenticate to directory services using the
supplied credentials".

My development environment is Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition.
Sine I was last able to successfully connect to an ADAM instance the
following changes were made on my testing server:
1) Disabled IPSEC services because I was having problems accessing the
internet through our local network
2) Downloaded and installed WSE 2.0 SP2 (Web Services).
3) Installed Microsoft Office XP Word
4) Installed Microsoft Visio 2002
5) Installed various Microsoft Security Updates

Any ideas? directions?
