are you talking about NT4 BDCs or normal member servers? If member servers,
the AD domain doesn't need to be be in mixed mode - this is just applicable
for DCs!

check the following
- previous computer account for the NT4 machine is removed from the domain
- AD DC running PDC emulator FSMO is available (if you didn't change it,
this is the first DC in the domain) and registering in WINS
- if the NT4 servers don't have SP4 installed, they won't handle SMB
signing - someone might have turned on this requirement on the domain
(defaul DC policy)
