GPs not applied to Mandatory Profiles

I have set up a man profile for many of our users, which seems to work fine.
However, group policies set up in the AD are not applied to the users - things
such as folder redirection, mapped drives (via a script), desktop background,
disabling cmd, etc.

Works fine for our roaming profile users, but not for the mandatory ones.

Have checked the usual stuff (SYSVOL is accessible, etc)

Windows XP clients, Server 2000 servers.

Apologies if this is the wrong group or this is a FAQ I've missed.

Incidently, this is for a school, and I notice that several other schools have
posted in uk.education.schools-it with similar problems (with assorted
XP/2000/2003 combinations), and no solution.
