windows authentication and web pages

Is it possible to have a login form on a webpage access
users setup on the server in AD? My understanding is that
if you want to use windows authentication (AD users) then
it prompts you with a windows login screen. What I want
to do is have a username field and password field on the
web page that people use to login, not the windows login
prompt. But I want to use users setup on the server not a
database of users and paswords that the webpage accesses.
thanks
