DCPROMO Question

I have a domain with one win2k3 DC and one win2k DC in it and I want to
raise my forest level but can't until I either upgrade my win2k DC to win2k3
or demote it to a member server. I am thinking for the time being I may
just demote it. It is acting as the DC and a secondary DNS server for my
domain. Can I just DCPROMO it or do I have to worry about transferring
roles first? If I do need to transfer the roles how do I do that? I know
it isn't good practice to have only one DC in a domain, but hopefully soon I
can convince management to buy another license.

My other question is I have another child domain in this same forest that
was my PDC running NT4. I loaded up a new server with NT4 made it a BDC and
then promoted it to PDC. Then upgraded it to win2k3. I still have that NT4
machine running and is now a BDC. Can I still raise my forest level with
that being on the network?

Thanks
