Steve,
Have you tried using system monitor to track AD performance on the
boxes. The NTDS option on the Performance Object drop-down list
contains all the Active Directory-related counters.

You can also check out memory usage, processor time and other key
performance counters.

I'll continue to think about this and get back if come up with any
other ideas.
