And thank you for the link. It's helped me to verify
something. When I go to the properties tab for the domain
under the DNS Management console, I see that the domain, is
, in fact, running. According to the document you linked,
four things must be present for Active Directory to be
communicating with the domain - _msdcs, _sites, _tcp and _upd.

So, all those files are there and the status of the domain
and DNS service say "running". What could cause the
breakdown in communication between the domain and Active
Directory? As I said before, there were no changes made or
reboots or anything. The service simply seemed to fail.
