MS has taken a pretty good stab at making interoperability doable between AD
and *nix systems. Windows Services for Unix is freely available and good
for authenticating *nix clients against AD and sharing resources across both
platforms. I haven't had to use it much in a production environment, but it
installed like a dream in a test bed.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sfu/default.asp is its home on the
Microsoft website. Download the service, read the white paper and product
docs.
