We have a number of small offices, 6 - 12 users per office, spread
around the country. These offices are connected to HQ via frame relay,
with each location getting around 128K connections. To reduce network
traffic, I am considering removing the Global Catalog role from the DCs
in each of these offices while maintaining the GCs here at HQ.
The employee roster in each location is static, and we don't have
employees from one office regularly visiting other offices. The internet
gateway and the mail server for these offices is located at HQ. The DCs
in the remote offices also function as file servers.
What is the biggest risk or drawback I could suffer if I remove the GC
role from the remote DCs? We still have GCs here at HQ, and, barring a
loss of the frame relay, any AD related activities can always check back
here. The application load, however, is very simple, focused on mail,
web access, and MS Office.
Thanks in advance,
hbchrist
