Dave I hope I understand your problem.
I understand that you want to search for user object based on criteria
broader than the 'Common Queries' and add these users to a specific group.
Why not search these users from a designated OU or the 'root' of you domain
OU tree, select the ones that you want , right click on them and select 'Add
to Group ..'.
Please post if I missed the point here.
