Hello Rustom,
did you look at the domain rename guide on the web? It explains step by step
what to do. For DNS you should hold the old and the new zones on the same
servers. Then you don't even need forwarding, since forwarding is just used if
the zone informations are not available on the current server or any
delegations.

After the domain rename you need to clean up all applications which are using
the old domain names, then you can delete the old zones. What I'd do is moving
the old zones to a different server, use conditional forwarding from the
servers holding the new zones to the server providing the old zone, and have
all clients point to the servers holding the new zones. Then you are able to
verify via the cache of the servers holding the new zone what records have been
queried of the old zones. Should give you a possibility to identify the
applications you need to adjust. And make sure you set the domain suffix search
order to query first for the new name, then the old name, so that you can make
sure that you don't get to much names in the cache b/c of applications using
short names.
