Since today I couldn't connect anymore to my Vista's MCE, which I found was weird, because I - thought - didn't do anything special to my system.
Then I looked down and saw my Vista learning book (MCTS) on my desk and it hit me... I was fiddling around with LGPO's.
I immediately went to Local Computer Policy (mmc snap-in) - Windows Settings - Security Settings - Local Policy - Security Options.
I changed: System Cryptography: Use FIPS Compliant Algorithms for Encryption, Hashing and Signing back to Disabled, tested Xbox' MCE and I could get in with no problems.

Windows Vista Ultimate and XBOX 360
Hi All,
just finished udating to vista ultimate and have an issue with the XBOX 360,
the XBOX is connected via RJ45 to a 100MB network to the desktop.
When I try to setup MCE it gets to step Setting Media Locations (6325) and
ticks that it then moves to Connecting to Extender but fails to go any
further, on the XBOX it has "Contacting". I have tried it both with and
without a firewall issue remains, plugged in directly to the desktop and
xbox and via a router.
If I run the network test it tells me it has slow performance.
I have also tried WMP11 media sharing and it works fine for video and music.
Any assistance very much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi SAS,
I had exactly the same symptoms after a deliberate undocumented timebomb
("Trial Expiration") planted by Microsoft went off on 1st January for the
Media Center Experience in Vista RC1. The first signs were the XBox Extender
failing as you have described.... Uninstall, reinstall, disable, enable,
disconnect, reconnect, update, downdate, restore, unrestore... I tried
everything for two flippin days. After abusing eveyone I could think of - I
even gave Symantec a blast for old times sake - I discovered that I couldn't
watch the sample LiveTV and Videos anymore, and it was only there that I
discovered the "Trial Expiration" message, which I searched on this forum and
then learnt the bad news.
Vista Ultimate was fantastic until this episode left a bad taste in my mouth.
Do you have the real thing? Paid in full?

Hi Todd,
Yes it is a full 100MB connection, the NIC in the PC is a Integrated one for
a MSI Motherboard. As I said the video streaming works fine with WMP11 but
not WMC.
The Network is by default Wired cable to a Belkin Router, then Wired to the
XBOX. I have taken the router out and issue remains.
Thanks

I have the same issue. I have previously tried beta versions of Vista
MCE and have had no problem. I've now bought my own legal copy of
Vista Ultimate and can't get my 360 to work as an extender.
My 360 must be able to see my PC as when I try to connect from my
Extender a small dialogue box appears saying do you want to go to Media
Center and configure your extender so there must be connectivity.
I then start the config and enter my 8 character Xbox 360 code.
I then get to the screen where is says Configuring your Extender and
gets stuck on just gets stuck on Searching for Extender.
I have reinstalled VIsta so there's absolutely nothing else installed
other than the default installation.
I get the following errors in the event log and unhelpfully when it
offers to connect me to Microsoft they have no info for the error
code.
This one is successful:
