Re: Corrupt Operating System....need help!

Hey Gene,
Thanks for the input...glad that you in fact found something positive out of
this...i will be sure to follow up when i receive disk.....
spoke to dell again, it is being shipped on 8th and should expect on
11th....only thing is that the web link i posted will not work for me because
it is only for computers under warranty.....
oh well....
talked them down from the 49.00 to 19.48(includes shipping and tax), so i am
happy about that...
once received i will try system file checker(sfc/scannow) with disk to see
if i can fix...if not i will try repair with disk, and if all else fails, i
will "clean" install all over.....
hopefully the disk will fix enough to create successful backup of data,
which might even be possible now, i dont know.....scared to try!....
anyway, thank you for input

Good luck! And please let us know how it goes when the new disk
arrives.

Let's hope it works.

Your story prompted me into some action here - I had already made the
recovery disks for two computers here when they were new, but after
this thread I decided to image both sets of DVDs onto an external hard
drive for an added layer of safety. Thanks!

BTW, one of the two is an HP, so if those DVDs went bad I wouldn't be
allowed to make a new set; that makes the backup important...But if an
unrestricted recovery partition got sick you couldn't recreate the DVDs
anyway.

Here's what Billy Ganoe wrote on 9/04/09:
yes recovery partition is installed, it is how backup disk was made. I am
uncertain if i will be able to use though because of problem with homemade
back up disk and conflict with product # not being recognized.... dell will
not assist because desktop is over 4 years old and out of warranty, although
they did offer me backup/reinstallation disk for 49.00....haha....anyway
found site on dell:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/en/backupcd_form?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&redirect=1

this offers backup disk to users for 1 time basis, which supposidy is a copy
of original factory settings...im assuming its free because i placed order
and received confirmation notice without any request for payment.....i will
use it to try and repair system first, then backup personal data, as i am
uncertain if successful backup of data can made with corruption of
system....then after that if more problems, i will do "clean"
installation....just trying to avoid losing data and the hours of updating
all drivers/programs/etc.... all over again!

Still, if his "backup" is a valid copy of the recovery partition onto a
set of DVDs or CDs it should definitely work from the original product
key...Although IIRC, the recovery operation doesn't need a key, does
it?

He should call Dell again and hope that he gets a more knowledgeable
technician.

There should be a Recovery Partition. Don't you have any such?

the reinstallation disk was made by me months ago from same computer...it
loads, just wont let me past product key# info....
dell never sent original reinstall disk...
just got off with them and they told me key# is for original, not
backup...they also told me backup disk is incase original is
cracked/broken,
so if key# is for original why make backup?....
that shut them up as they had no answer...
anyway i know about sound driver...it does not crash system, just wont
install...
i honestly dont know exactly how long dll error has been coming up,
atleast a couple of months....

yes there other DLL files corrupt as i am told that DLL files need to be
copied to cache when i try to run system file checker.....
no retail or boot copy available to me...i do have xp professional and
vista
on two seperate laptops but xp professional will not work with xp media
center....
i did not check event viewer yet, but i can if need be for more info...all

You probably need to check with Dell support to find out why the
reinstall disk won't work with your key.

As S.Sengupta wrote the error is related to your sound driver, but it
sounds
like some other files may be corrupt on the hard drive. You said you
can't reinstall the sound drivers, does that crash the system or it won't
run at all?

When did this start... after an update or install of something?

Do you have (or know someone who has) a retail or boot copy of XP that
you could boot from and run some diagnostics or run the recovery tool?

Do you have any other errors in the event log?

i have a dell dimension XPS 200 desktop with external hard drive
installed,
running Windows XP Media Center Edition ver. 5.1 with SP3 installed.
My problem is that I have a corrupt operating system. Every start up
of computer, i get error message, "Error Loading CTMBHA.Dll - dynamic
link library(DLL) initialization failed". I have run "dskchk" which
doesnt show
anything and attempted to run System File Checker, which will not
complete
because i get message, "files that are required for windows to run
properly
must be copied to the DLL cache". Heres where my problem comes in, i
do not
have original installation disk, as it never arrived with computer
from dell.
I do have a backup reinstallation disk, which i made off this
computer, but
it will not work because it asks for product key number and the key
number
attached to PC does not work. Now, just last night, i got the "blue
screen"
of death. I have downloaded the debug tool and this is the synopsised
info:

Bucket ID: 0x7E_nt!FsRt1RemovePerStreamContext+1E

Process Name: System

Module Name: nt

Image Name: ntkrpamp.exe

I need help. Is there anyway to fix corrupt OS without
original installation disk? Can anyone explain why i am being asked
for product key number on the homemade installation disk that i
created from
this
OS, and/or why the key # attached to PC isn't working? I really do
not wish
to have to do a "clean" installation off of new OS disk, because i do
not
want to lose files/data/pictures/etc......I dont even know if backup
files
for this data can be made successfully with corrupt OS....Someone
please
help....all advice accepted.
