Unable to update MCE to SP3 or install several other updates

Hello all,
I am working on a laptop with XP Media Center Edition. The laptop was
heavily infected with rogue antivirus and other malware, all of which seem to
have been cleaned off. After experiencing a number of problems, I decided to
do a repair install. This machine had been upgraded to SP3 prior to when I
received it.
I did the re-install with MCE with service pack 2 disks 1 & 2 and it worked
for the most part, but refused to load some files from the disks or the I386
folder on the computer. I would use some files from an XP Pro disk with SP3
on it while other files I had to skip because it would not accept any files I
had available to use from any disk. The machine mostly runs ok now, but
upgrading to SP3 fails every time, as does any attempt to install .net 1.0
service pack 3 and a couple other updates as well, while other updates did
install.
Frankly, I'm baffled as to how to fix this. I can post the svcpack.log if
need be.
