Java

I have two computers, one that is Windows XP media centre, desk top, and a
Vista lap top. Both have asked for Java to be updated. On the XP I stopped
that. What is Java for and if it says to uto update should I. On my XP I
have said not to update, until I found out about it. Where do I go to get
its update. And is it necessary? Thanks in anticipation.
