you need to describe your network in detail. wired? wireless? what
router? uninstall Norton or McAfee, is it a laptop with a
fingerprint reader? without details, you are unlikely to get a

My home network is running off of a Netgear WNDR3300 wireless N
router. My Xbox 360 is connected via an ethernet cable, and my Laptop
(a Dell XPS 1530) is connected via Wireless-N on the 5 Ghz band. I am
confident that the network modes are intersecting in the router,
because when I look at the network map on my laptop, the Xbox 360 is
visible. My laptop does have a fingerprint reader, though I don't use
it (and hopefully, that is not relevant...).

My laptop is running Vista Home Premium (kept up to date with auto-
update), and I do have the most current edition of Windows Media
Player 11 (11.0.6001.7004) on it. I have explicitly given sharing
authorization to my Xbox through the Laptop's File/Media Sharing
settings. The Windows Media Center Version is 6.0.6001.18000. I
thought it might be helpful to try and uninstall and reinstall Windows
Media Player, but apprently it's a built in part of the Vista OS and I
haven't found the place to try and remove it then reinstall it yet.

I am using the standard Microsoft Firewall, along with Microsoft
Defender and AVG Anti-Virus Free. During my numerous connection
attempts, I have tried disabling all of these, with no success. I
even went into the firewall and manually entered in the port
exceptions listed on the Xbox help screen during connection failure.
The router setup is defaulted to allow UPnP discovery with 30 min
advertisement period and a 4 hop Time to Live.

Please, let me know if there are any other details which might be
relevant.

Thank you,
Mike

There was a known problem with HP Fingerprint readers and connecting Extenders, I don't recall if that also existed with the Dell systems.

If you aren't using the reader, you could try completely removing the software and see if that helps.
