Re: Service Pack 3 corrupted OS, need install disk for Media Cente

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Curious and David B. Thank you for the insightful explanation of sw
licensing. I think I pretty much knew that but you explained it well.

Of course, in my situation, the machine hasn't died just the OS is
corrupted. I don't need to "own" a copy of the install disk, just borrow it.
But, apparently HP or Microsoft don't have a way to do that. So I guess my
only option is to back up all my data, settings, preferences, etc., perform a
"restore", then reinstall all my applications, data, etc. And this is the
result of a Microsoft service pack update. You can believe that I'll have
automatic updates turned off in the future. Regards, Steve

They claim correctly, they will only provide their recovery kit. The OS
license you have is for that PC only, you do not own it, you have the right
to use it on that PC only, and when that machine dies, the OS license dies
with it, that's the way OEM works. The answers you've received here are
pretty much all we can suggest. You can likely obtain a copy of the OEM MCE
installation media via torrent, but your own your own with that.

Thanks for the reply Barb. HP claims they don't have install disks, only
recovery disks, which of course, will wipe out my data and restore to
original factory state. Yes I know that no one can legally give me the
software but I do legally own the OS, and I'm not trying to defraud HP or
Microsoft.

When Service Pack 3 was installed on my media center PC it corrupted the

so I couldn't start in normal mode, only safe mode. With the help of
Microsoft support I reverted to Service Pack 2, disabled some drivers,

got running in normal mode, but somewhat crippled. Now, Microsoft
support
says that to fix the corrupted OS they need the Media Center install
disk,
(not the restore disk.) HP doesn't have such a thing for my Pavillion
PC.
Microsoft won't ship an OS disk to customers. I don't want to buy the
software for $130+ in order to fix this stupid problem caused by MS.
Does
anyone have a Media Center OS install disk I could get a copy of? The OS
install isn't hardware specific, so any version will do. Or does anyone
have
another solution?
