MS isn't the one who sold you the bad copy of XP. You said it was reported as pirated, that implies and illegally produced copy, not simply a matter of using the wrong type of setup disk for your situation. Normally, if the copy was the wrong match (a Dell disc in a non-Dell machine, trying to use an upgrade for a full install, etc.), you would not even be able to install, you would be warned (and not allowed to continue) when you put in the CD Key that came with the disc.
You said it was an OEM disc, are you saying it is a generic OEM full version of XP with CD Key or by OEM, did you mean a Dell/Sony/HP etc. disc?
Again, MS has nothing against purchasing OEM copies, in fact, that is the only way one could purchase the XP version of Media Center Edition. MS only would have a problem with a counterfeit copy of their OS. So one of two thing happened, you were sold a bad copy, whether accidently or on purpose that is a problem with the vendor. The other possibility (although less likely) is the that you have receive a defective copy that is not registering correctly, in which case, you would need to call MS to get it straighten out or have the vender send you a replacement copy. In either event MS is not trying to "rip you off"

Thanks for the reply, Jaime..
First: Acknowledged. This is the first time I have used a forum and I messed
it up. I have cross-posted to the WIN XP New Users forum this time.
Second: Why is it that MS are not ripping me off? My understanding is that I
have not broken any rules and have paid fair and square for the software.
Nobody in the forum has answered this very basic question.
Third: Still waiting for the response to my emailed query to the vendor (a
respected online retailer). I will phone as well soon enough.

First, this is a Windows Media Center group, your question doesn't seem to
have anything to do with Media Center.
Second, no MS is not ripping you off, but the dealer you bought from may be.
Third, (and the most obvious point), what did the vendor who you bought the
copy of XP say when you called them?
