where do i get the free download for AVG? Every site i am trying wants me to
sign up for something.

One of the main reasons your PC is slow is Norton Antivirus, download either.
AVG or Avast (both free), uninstall Norton, reboot (you'll be surprised at
the performance increase), then install the new antivirus you downloaded.
Also download and run PC Decrapifier http://www.pcdecrapifier.com and let it
uninstall all of the Dell fluff software that you don't use.

I originally installed spybot from download.com. I have now downloaded it
from safer-networking and also downloaded the malwarebytes you recommended
but when running the free trial, it froze. I will revisit that issue soon
and try it again.
In July of 2006, I bought a Dell Dimension XPS 400, Intel Pentium D
Processor 820 (2.8 GHz) w/Dual Core Technology; 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz;
128MB ATI Hyper Memory PCI-Express X16 Radeon X300 SE; 250 GB SATA II Hard
Drive
45.7 used -- 182 GB free memory; 228 capacity and I have Norton AnitVirus
So far, this computer has been great! I try to take care of it myself as
I
own my own business and don't have an IT guy to call.
Let me know if you need anymore information.

If you installed spybot and it had a virus in it, you didn't get it
direct
form the source, which is here http://www.safer-networking.org
I would also recommend running malwarebytes http://malwarebytes.org/
Also, when you reply, provide your system specs, make/model, free hard
drive
space, installed memory, CPU, etc. What anti-virus application are you
using?

Removing IE8 seems to have done the trick. Thank you!
But, I did not install IE8 to enhance my PC's performance. It seems
that
my
Internet runs slow, delaying going from page to page. I thought a
newer
version would help. I continually delete my cookies, temp internet
files
and
clear out the history. I also run the disk cleanup utility often. I
have
cable and have just upgraded for $10 more a month for faster speed.
Anything else i can do? I used to have Spybot Search and Destroy that
i
felt kept my computer clean of spyware, but last time I installed the
program, it came with a virus.

remove
the IE8 beta and post back with the results.

I currently have Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service
Pack
3.
My computer stalls when shutting down at the "Windows is Shutting
Down"
screen. I have to manually shut down. Any thoughts as to why?
The only thing I remember that i have down is update Internet
Explorer
7
to
Internet Explorer 8 due to my Internet running slow (which it still
is).
Thanks in advance!
Sissy
