Thanks guys. I'll bookmark these sites and talk to my wife (she's the one
that wants this done) to see if she wants to invest more time and money into
this project.
I was afraid that it was some sort of protection program on the tape.

There is a way around the Macrovision protection..
As long as you are not interested in the Closed Captions.
There are devices that normalize the VBI Vertical Blanking Interval.
They are called "Digital Video Stabilizer"
I have the Model 200. Works, but takes out the Closed Captions also.

If you order one of the above, ask the seller to test the unit before
shipping. The first unit I got had no Video output. It was replaced as fast
as the mail both ways.
The next two links are for similar devices.

I have been trying to record a VCR tape onto my Media Edition PC so that I
can create a DVD of the tape. I have tried it on the ArcSoft software
that
came with the PC (ShowBiz 2) and on a freeware program I downloaded
(Debut
Video Capture) and have the same problem with both. As the video is
playing
on the PC screen, the lighting in the picture goes from normal to very
dark
(like a night scene), and back to normal. It does not do this on a
regular
basis, but just off and on. The computer records the movie just like I
see it
on the screen, so the DVD would come out the same way. I have tried two
different video tapes and get the same result with both. The movies play
fine
on the TV screen.
Is this some type of anti-copy system on the VCR tape?
I want to make DVDs of one of these movies because our DVD/VCR player
pooped
out on the DVD player side and the new DVD player we bought doesn't do
VCR
tapes. This movie only came out on VCR, and has never been released on
DVD.
