The auto-update is only for download. It prompts for install. I've never
had any problems before but I'll make that change, once I can get my computer
back to normal.
What is a BSOD?
Yes, safe mode is the only way I can access my computer now and be able to
see what I'm doing. I've logged on and uninstalled the previous drivers,
rebooted, and installed the new driver (also repeated and tried older
drivers) but still the blank screen. The computer still appears to load up
as normal and the HDD lights are behaving as it normally should but I just
can't see the desktop. I've tried to restore with several previous dates but
same end result.
I'm almost certain it's a software conflict but not sure where that lie.
I've seen another post where the person used a Registry software remover to
get rid of "dead" keys but I came up with over 800 registry links so I'm a
little afraid to delete that many registry keys fearing I won't be able to at
least get back into safe mode to reverse it if it fails. Any suggestions?

Hi Ed,.
One suggestion from me for preventing future problems : Set your automatic
updates to auto download but not auto install. For updates concerning
hardwares don't let Windows Update do it.
One concern though, you should not get a frozen screen for driver mishap.
You should get a BSOD instead. so its unlikely.
Have you tried do what I suggested earlier? booting in safe mode or last
known configuration? have you installed any new active software before the
problem occurs?

I have Curious, but it won't fix the problem. I've tried uninstalling and
reinstalling but it won't work. The windows update was automatic so I don't
know what was downloaded. Is there some log I can look up?

If you let windows update update any drivers this could be the cause of your
problem especially if you let it update a graphics card driver. Get the
latest drivers from the manufacturers website or the chip manufacturers
website in the case of graphics cards.

I'm having the same problem. My problem all started about a week ago
after
an automatic Windows update. When it rebooted I get the blank screen and
have been ever since. I've noticed by other people's posts that this has
been an old problem but suddenly is happening again and yet Microsoft nor
anyone else has been able to figure out what the problem is. I've done
everything: replaced drivers, restored OS, checked for dust, everything
but
yet no resolution.
If any contributors or Microsoft techs are reading this, FIGURE THIS CRAP
OUT PLEASE!!!!

Was on the internet when my laptop froze. Waited 2 hours then powered
down.
Now I get a blank black screen after Windows XP screen goes away during
start-up. Have tried advanced start up options but no success. I would
like
to save as much information on my hard drive as possible. Any
suggestions??
