I'm very pleased it helped.
All of a sudden, I feel like backing up is under control. The idea of
messing about with CDs/DVDs and the cold sweat brought on by hard disk
problems are both a thing of the past.
Cheers
Eric

Sorry if it is off topic but....
I got tired of trying to backup all the small files that everyone cares
about off my media center PC, onto DVD. The music files, the photos, the
Word, excel, powerpoint etc. My kids' homework/coursework and my wife's work.
It went to about 4 DVDs, but whenever they lost anything, it was the most
recent stuff - that they had created since the last backup.
I have 3 PCs on a home network, and the Media PC sort of acts like a
'server' - holding all the files. So the hard disks of the other PCs are
mostly empty.
So I now use MS SyncToy -
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c26efa36-98e0-4ee9-a7c5-98d0592d8c52&DisplayLang=en
It runs on the other PC, and every hour it checks if there have been any
file changes on the main PC and copies those changes onto an 'echo' copy in
the spare disk space on my secondary PC. Any files deleted or changed on the
main PC end up in the wastebasket of the secondary PC - which just needs to
be cleared out occasioanally.
Here is the thread where I discussed it -

I'd recommend it to anyone who has a similar problem and infrastructure

Is it possible to backup non-media files (e.g. word, Excel) to a DVD using
Windows XP Media Centre Edition?
Thank you so much for the tip and link for MS SyncToy. We have a home network and my pc is also used as a 'server' much as you described in your scenario. I have tried other 'sync' apps but this free MS product is way cool beans! My wife is a photo / video journalist and this is by far the best sync tool we have tried. Thank you so much Eric. We also use it to keep my nearly 9,000 music files backed up on her pc. It's ability to run several different 'sync pairs' as a single task is great when using Vista Task Scheduler too. Gracias amigo!
