Re: DVD playback, that's were it started for me

if this has been an issue since July, I'd really recommend that you
back up your data and do a format and clean install or a complete HP
factory recovery. don't install any of your own programs. don't
install any drivers from windows update, use only the DRIVERS from
the HP site.

It is impossible to tell what kind of condition your system is in
now given the long list of things you have tried.

It all started in or around July 2008. My girlfriend reported that she was
having some problems when trying to watch a DVD, some kind of stutter or
hiccup, but eventually got it to play. I tried a couple of days later to
watch the same DVD, kept getting errors, and would not play. Summer started
and neither one of us has tried to watch any DVD, until last week.
Everything on my system was running smooth. All programs and hardware
seemed stable, including everything in Media Center.
So, I put in a DVD, it starts to play, you can see the FBI warning, and
about 30-45 seconds into viewing the DVD, the program crashes. I was using
Media Center. I have found that all the DVD players on my machine, WinDVD,
Media Player, Real Player, and Media Center display the same characteristics
and crash the player program with the same errors.
I went looking around the net, searching forums, blogs, community groups,
archives, databases, Microsoft, and HP, and more, for some kind of solution
to my problem. Nothing exactly matched the symptoms or error codes I was
experiencing.
I have kept up with the latest downloads, updates, update rollups, service
packs, knowledgebase articles, hot fixes, driver updates, codecs updates, and
anything else I was alerted to or found through research and reading.
I visited the HP support site. They suggested for a DVD play problem, to
run the system provided PC Doctor on my DVD drive. Failure of my drive was
not an initial thought, although I had not played a DVD successfully since
July, it was just 2 weeks ago that I burned a DVD movie successfully. After
running PC Doctor on my DVD drive, it did fail a Linear seek test with an
error code DV523-1. It told me to contact the OEM for the failure code
analysis. I called HP, they told me simply the drive was bad and needed
replaced.
I replaced the HP drive with a Samsung equivalent.
Same exact problem and errors.
About the errors.
First ?error? window to pop up after 30-40 seconds of DVD play is;
MEDIA CENTER
Media Center has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for
the inconvenience. For more information about this error, click here.
It has a Debug button and a close button. The Debug button, when clicked,
apparently does nothing. (The same error message appears whichever DVD
player program is used, with the exception of the ?name of the program? has
encountered a problem and needs to close.) The click here for more
information, brings up this window;

Then, when click here, a Error Report Content window pops up,

The following files will be included in this error report.

This error report can be sent to anyone who thinks they can help, and who
can tell me how to get it to you.

Always the same error messages, but on occasions another error message
window would pop up in conjunction with the preceding error messages when
trying to play a DVD;

MEDIA CENTER
The instruction at 0x4fe775ae referenced memory at 0x060900. The memory
could not be ?written?.

So, I was getting nowhere in search for solutions to this problem. Then I
found this Microsoft KB Article 820121.
Computer Stops Responding or You Receive ?Ehshell.exe ? Common Language
Runtime Debugging Services? Error Message when you perform repetitive tasks
in Media Center.
So I thought since ehshell.exe error showed up and I certainly do repetitive
tasks as described in the article, and a hotfix existed, that I qualified for
free Microsoft support.

The resolution in this article was to update to the latest service pack (I
have), and Hotfix Information. A supported hotfix is now available from
Microsoft?????????...
To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft at
//support.microsoft??..
I got the telephone number, and called.
I convinced the representative that I had a hotfix problem, and she
forwarded me on to a technician.
Two and half hours later my system was creating more errors (every 30
seconds, without doing anything), My TV did not work, DVD?s still did not
work, and the whole system is running allot slower. He said sorry, and would
have someone call me tomorrow who was more knowledgeable in Media Center than
him. He asked for a two hour window to call. Well, that time came and went
with no phone call. (My ticket number 1086209644)
He attempted numerous things remotely to fix the system. Some Codecs
downloads, some system checks, some cmd run lines, and downloading some kind
of basic video player to see if DVD?s would play. Nope, the system became
more unstable and unlike ever before.

Now I get error every thirty seconds;
MEDIA CENTER RECEIVER SERVICE
Media Center Receiver Service has encountered a problem and needs to close.
For more information about this error click here.
And of course a Debug button that does nothing.

And this error:

This memory could not be ?written?.
Click on OK to terminate the program.
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

Debuging seems to have no effect. And when I click OK to terminate, the
same error message pops up again in about 30 seconds.

Thanks Microsoft.

Does anyone know anything about what?s going on with my formally sweet
system? Can anyone help?

More information is available; I thought this was enough for now.
