even viewer under media center
during this test 4 message under media center did create the following
messages
seems like the first was the uninstall
Windows Media Center Extender 'uuid:2C871B6C-B6AB-4D19-BB95-807808D5B3FF'
was uninstalled.

and than

Windows Media Center Extender DMA2100us (n7zghyun6kab)
'uuid:2C871B6C-B6AB-4D19-BB95-807808D5B3FF' discovered at address
192.168.0.194.
next message
Windows Media Center Extender account Mcx1 has been created for device
'uuid:2C871B6C-B6AB-4D19-BB95-807808D5B3FF'.

and the forth
Windows Media Center Extender setup has exchanged certificates with device
'uuid:2C871B6C-B6AB-4D19-BB95-807808D5B3FF'.

this would indicate it connected...
but... did not

nope same result ---
configuration fine...
extender goes through.. communicating with pc .. starting up ... and next
prompt -- cannot connect .......
same message on laptop windows media center -- configuration .. first three
prompts are ok -- and than ---
the message extender "configured but extender failed to connect"
so -- I think i will give up on this.. this just does not seem to be stable
application.
Maybe one day microsoft and/or the related hardware and application vendor
get their act together and makes it stable and managenable...
the idea is great but it just does not work
thanks

that router should be fine. what version firmware are you running?

let's make sure we have the windows firewall turned off. open an
administrative cmd prompt

Disable Firewall by typing

netsh firewall set opmode disable

leave the cmd prompt running so that we you are done you can enable
the Firewall by typing

netsh firewall set opmode enable

I'm told that the way to turn off the One Care Firewall (I don't run
this myself) is to open One Care>Change Settings>Firewall>Off

Next make sure that remote desktop is enabled (right click computer,
Remote settings) and on the bottom, make sure the middle button is
checked to allow Remote Desktop from any version.

Go into the extender settings and remove any affiliated pc.

unplug it. plug it back in, etc.

Now go into media center and remove any existing affiliated extender
(the one you are trying to set up) IF it is already there.

then go and Add Extender.

What happens?

The wireless router is d-link dr-655
I also tried to connect through ethernet cable - bypassing the wireless
setup -- and yes -- tried to disable both firewall -- windows and life
onecare
and I can see on the router the ip-address is assigned and I see in network
on the laptop ... the ip-address as connected
I see the extender 2100 on the network map as connected --
not sure which event I should look on the event viewer ..
event viewer under application/media -- shows only an entry from several
days back -- nothing current.

which wireless router?
can you disable all firewalls to trouble shoot and see if you can
make a connection and successfully affiliate the extender?

I opened all the ports form the microsoft page. I do not know where to look
in the event viewer for which error.
I followed all suggestion -- reboot.
I have two firewalls- regular windows firewall and live on care - both
configured correct as far as I can see. media center is flagged as a on
I am not sure what to check for next
