Re: MediaCenter vs XP

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

As mentioned, MCE is XP Pro with some extra services and apps, plus some of the corporate domain feature disabled (these can be enabled with some workarounds).

Other than that, I have seen no functional difference between XP Pro and MCE, especially when in the standard XP interface. The only issues reported here with any regularity seem to be with some specialized audio recording apps and hardware. These problems seem more to do with the MFG not wanting to test and certify their product for MCE, so they simply choose to not allow it to install.

The vast majority of apps and hardware for normal use run the same on a MCE system as they would on XP. I actually have several MCE 2005 machine running on our corporate domain-based network (they were acquired second-hand and hacked to work on the domain). They run just everything fine including several SQL, network-based apps. I have one MCE 2005 system at home (used primarily for the MC functions) and it runs the same as any other XP system.

If you are having trouble, is it possible that it stems from MCE being XP Pro rather than XP Home?

Is MediaCenter really just XP with some extra programs in it?

To replace my dead PC, I've built the new box with MediaCenter
instead of XP just for grins, but enough weird things are
happening that - grasping at straws - I'm thinking of re-building
with XP.

Wasted effort?
