Re: All work and music lost

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Most likely it is malware.

Once the data is deleted, it is just gone.
Malware does not put data it deletes into the recycle bin, malware often
disables the Recycle bin.

One of the dangers of running unprotected on the internet.

Nobody can backup their computer often enough.
I do data backup once per week. I image the OS every couple of months.
I took some learning on my part to do the backups as I should.

The cost of an external USB hard drive is cheap, when you lose everything.

Thank you all for the suggestions - sorry for the vague question, but I
have
had two clients where this is exactly what happened.

I have advised the latest client to try a system restore, although that
didn't help on the previous client's computer.

You are right, neither teenager had backed up their work...

What I had hoped to come across is whether this is a known problem at the
moment. e.g. as a result of Windows XP service pack 3?

I turned on my Windows XP computer this morning, and all my work and

All was well yesterday when I turned it off - I would be very grateful
for
any suggestions on what to do.

As has already been indicated in this thread, you don't provide much
data, so the following is how to deal with a worst-case scenario.

Don't do *anything* that might write to the old drive until you have
recovered your data.

Your best bet might be to start by removing the hard drive from the
computer and connecting it to another computer with a USB adapter. Then
copy everything from the old drive to a new one.

You might need to run data recovery software (not free - maybe $80).
