Re: XP cannot read disk from MyComputer but can Via Network share

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

The weird thing is I did not, This drive has been here at that letter since
the beginning. Anything I connect gets a higher drive letter.

And the strange thing is that the drive does work half way on that letter,
as it can play commercial disks.

Some weird corruption must be going on in the registry.

I would have to agree with Gene.
You must have had a D: defined previous, Maybe an external USB device.

Glad you got the problem solved.

It is a bit of a mystery, but I have a guess. Not knowledge - just a
guess.

Maybe somewhere along the line you have mounted anther device as drive D:,
such as a memory stick or a flash card in a reader. Now Windows is mixed
up and can't see the drive as a CD/DVD. This is a bug in Windows, if so.

For a possible example of Windows's behavior: today I looked at two SD
cards I just bought to make sure they're OK. I checked the first card &
put a label on it (let's say GINO), then took it out (properly). I
rebooted (for another reason) and then later put in the second card. It
showed up in Windows Explorer as GINO, though it was fresh out of the box,
and though I had booted Windows in between. I ejected it and looked at in
on the Mac side (I run Windows on a VM). It was shown (correctly) as No
Name. I went back to Windows (it was still shown wrong) and renamed it to,
say, BLOCH. Weird.

Thanks,

The problem is definitely linked to a drive letter. I wen to disk
management, the drive did have a letter associated (D:) , so I changed it
to something else (G:) and then it works perfectly fine and open my DVDs
without problems.

I rebooted with the drive as G:, then I went to disk management and
changed it back to D: and the drive does not work any more.

I could probably just leave it on another letter, but I am really curious
of what can be corrupted that prevents the drive to open disks when under
the letter D:

Ideas welcome :)

My system has suddently developped a weired behavior. It plays
commercial DVD
and CDs fine, but disks I created do not open. When I put them in the
drive ,
they show up in MyComputer with the proper DVDname I gave them, but do
not
open.

After putting my Drive in another PC where it worked fine, and testing
that
installing another drive in would have the same problem, I shared the
DVD
drive, and tested if I could access the file from another machine
across the
network, and IT DID.

So I tried to go in My Network Places On my machine (the one with the
problem), selected the shared DVD drive (that is on the same machine),
and I
can open the DVD fine from there.

So basically on the same machine, I cannot open a DVD I created from
MyComputer but if I share the drive I can access it from My Network
places.

Does anyone has an idea of what could have gotten corrupted in XP (SP2)
to
explain that behavior ?

I don't know what is causing your strange behavior.
Did you Close the DVD when you burned it?

Something you may check.

Put in a Disk in the DVD drive (one you have trouble with).
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Administrative Tools > Computer
Management.
In computer management Storage > Disk Management.
Right Click the DVD drive, choose Change Drive Letter and Paths.
What does the text box say?

If there is not a Drive letter here, give it one.

You can also check the properties.
