Coud it be that your restoration cd is configured for the hardware it came
and now that detects a new hardware might be possible that it won't recognize
as valid your upgrade to mce2005 since it's like you have a new computer,
this sometimes happens with factory cd installations preloaded with drvers
intended only for the original settings. Anyway I'm just guessing

IMy son had a Gateway 510 XL computer with window XP media Cen ter 2004 and.
upgrade to MC 2005. We got it from Gatewy and worked ok. The hard drive just
failed and we replaced it with a new one. I reload the Media Center 2004 from
the original restore CD which came with the computer. It needed winows update
which I did for a while and I put it in the Media Center 2005 upgrade first
and second disk. was ok but did not let me install the 3rd disk which is the
roll up patch.
Since then I can not update the windows. Win installer 3.1 is not installing
and does not let me do anything to update. MC2005 is not working.
I was wondering if I get a new 2005 or later Window XP pro or Home can I
install it ? Reformate hard drive and reinstall the new window since he does
not need the media center except the files in it for his Zune. Zune does not
work with the 2004 just the later addition of Media Center but it works with
my Window XP Pro.
So you think I justbuy a new window XP and do a clean installation?
I tried all the 3.1 installer repair suggested and none works. Hate to start
again with the restore CD and not been able to get it workink. Gateway
support is not helping!!!!
Thaks!!
