Re: External Floppy Drive simply 'quit'

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

-- Thanks...yes, thought of that...but, since this is a System32 file,
deleting the file or renaming the old file, simply means that XP immediately
loads another from the Cabs (?)...since you cannot delete or change a system
file. I will try your other suggestion since I have not done
that....thanks...(hate to reload Windows due to new video cards, drivers,
programs, etc., simply because a floppy does not work...but need to try)...

Since the floppy drive works on your wifes computer, that would lead me to
conclude that you have a software problem on your computer.

(sfloppy.sys and fdc.sys)
What would happen if you copied those files from your wife's computer and
put them on your computer?
After backing up the files on your computer.

If you have the Windows XP install CDs, you can try running sfc /scannow in
the Run command.

-- Since my computer did not come with a Floppy Drive, and needed one
so I
could use (get info) from my many Floppy Disks, so installed a Sony
External
Floppy Drive using USB. Worked fine...but, since use only
occasionally,
something happened. Yesterday, opened Device Manager (for another
reason)
and found the dreaded Yellow Ex. mark in the Sony External Drive.
Opened,
and got msg "Driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An
alternate driver mahy be providing this functionality (Code 320" Have
done a
lot on my own, but nothing works. It is connected via a USB Hub...as
other
things are. But, connecting to other USB ports does no good.
Connecting
directly to computer USB does no good. Uninstalling and re-installing,
via
Device Manager, does no good. When re-install, get msg WinXP found
hardware,
installed, but then gets msg 'your hardware has been installed, but due
to
installation problem, may not work, etc....' Do not know when this
happened
since use very seldom. Connected the Sony Floppy Drive to another
computer
which I (my wife) owns...installs and works fine. When I open System32
Drivers, drivers are there for the floppy (sfloppy.sys and fdc.sys) but
when
it installs on my computer, some wierd driver dated 2001 is loaded, and
it
does not allow use of the floppy drive. Need it. Have tried other
things,
but make this first post too long. Finally decided to let you guys
have a
go
at this...would appreciate if so very much....

First connect the External USB floppy directly to the computer, Hubs
don't
always work with devices that require power from USB.

Second, in Device manager uninstall the yellow marked device and reboot.

I don't know for sure, but I don't think the External Floppy requires a
driver to be installed, Windows XP should have the built in drivers for
the
floppy.
