Open the Command Prompt with administrative privileges and run this command in the cmd prompt: sfc /scannow

Hi S. Sengupta,

Thanks, but that didn't start Media Center. As soon as I hit Enter the start menu went away, but nothing started, no error messages, or anything.

I also tried starting it from a command line, in case that were to show any error messages, but it doesn't. It just returns the prompt. Here is what I ran in the command window:

C:\Users\Mark>cd c:\windows\ehome

c:\Windows\ehome>ehshell.exe

c:\Windows\ehome>

I also tried looking in the event log, at: "Computer Management / System Tools / Event Viewer / Applications and Services Logs / Media Center". There are some informational events from yesterday, but nothing shows up for today. So, starting ehshell.exe now doesn't cause anything to be put in the event log.

Also, I have a file: C:\Windows\ehome\ehshell.crash that was last modified yesterday (before I started today), and it contains:

Unhandled Exception - 09/13/2008 22:51:48
Message: Method not found: 'IntPtr System.Diagnostics.Process.d()'.
Exception:
System.MissingMethodException: Method not found: 'IntPtr System.Diagnostics.Process.d()'.

at ServiceBus.UIFramework.UserControlPoint.Launch(String args)
at Microsoft.MediaCenter.Internal.LaunchMediaCenter.LaunchMediaCenterHelper()

Additionally, I've looked at the running processes in Task Manager, and I do have these 2 processes running:

ehmsas.exe (Media Center Media Status Aggregator Service)
ehtray.exe (Media Center Tray Applet)

Despite the fact that ehtray.exe is running, I do not have any tray icon showing media center.

Thanks for your help,
Mark

Try this:-

In the Start Search box type in:-

%SystemRoot%\ehome\ehshell.exe and press the Enter Key.

Does it launch Media Center?

If it does then create a shortcut of the same.

Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately, I had 'System Protection' turned off, so don't have any restore points. I have the Vista DVD that came with my computer. Can I re-install only Media Center using that somehow? I couldn't find a way to remove/add it under "Control Panel / Programs and Features".

Thanks,
Mark

You may try System Restore.

Media Center won't start. I double click the shortcut, and it does a short hourglass, and then nothing. No error messages, nothing... It was working yesterday, and that was when I added a new extender (xbox 360). I've rebooted, and tried turning on/off the extender to see if that made a difference, but it won't start, and doesn't give me any clues why not. I'm running Vista Home Premium. Can I re-install Media Center somehow? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mark
