I uninstalled the KB946648 file and unchecked the box but didn't know how to
reinstall the file. When I tried to connect to live TV, the little icon would
spin for a couple of seconds working to open the video window but then would
stop and nothing happened. I would click on the tv icon again but nothing
would happen till I closed MC and restarted the prog. Clicking on the TV icon
again did the same as before; the icon spins for 2 seconds and just stops.
I tried restoring the system to several days before the dreaded upgrade and
now when I try to open media center, it opens but when I click on a category
like TV, Radio, etc., Media Center closes entirely.
I've spent no less than 10 frustrating hours in the last 2 days
uninstalling, reinstalling, restoring different dates searching for answers.
This happens so much with MSoft, they try to fix one thing and mess up other
things. Also, is SP3 something that might fix the problem? I was going to
install it but the commentary says not to install it if it is not for at
least 10 systems. I don't understand.
Where do I go from here????????

Uninstall KB946648 then in Media Center in Setting>Messenger and Caller ID.
uncheck the box “Allow instant messages within Media Center” then reinstall
KB 946648.

I've had the same problem with messenger. Used Media center to watch TV for
over 2 years with no problem until now. How do you uninstall the update? I
found the C:\Windows\$NtUninstallKB946648$\spuninst.text document saying
where the upgrade apparently deleted 3 earlier KB946648 dll files from
C:\windows\$hf_mig$\kb946648 and copied a \msgsc.dll file to C:\program
files\messenger.
I found what it did, but how do I undo it? I did a system restore from Wed
13 of Aug. since the update was on the 14th, but still doesn't work.

It’s the update for Windows Messenger 4.7 (946648).
If uninstall it the error goes a way, install it and error comes back.

3 days ago, after having used Media Center daily for 3 years. I have MCE

After clicking OK to the error message, MCE appears to be working
normally, so this seems to mostly be an annoyance more than anything
else. I'll post back here if I notice any other problems because of it.
