Re: Disk is not formatted error from dvd drive

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

If you have a desktop try here to get a set of disks.

For laptops.

My PC came with no install discs....it was already set up. It's a Sony
Vaio
and the DVD Player is a Pioneer. I'm used to strange stuff. Several
years
ago the ability to copy to CD in My Pictures disappeared from MANY peoples
computers. There were solutions HREG stuff....that did not work for many
peole including me. What actually happened is the recording tab had
disappeared from the properties on the DVD drive. To work around I have
used
Drag n Drop. And now several years later....I have the recording tab once
again and can now copy to CD from My PIctures if I so choose.

I read both of your posts.

Very strange indeed.

I know what I would do if it was my computer that caused all of those
problems.

At this point, I would backup all of my data to an external hard drive.

Then I would do a Clean Install of Windows and a minimum set of programs
that played DVDs.
I would try that and see what happens, I would also probably buy and
install a new DVD writer.

I don't know what brand of DVD writer you have, but I really like the
Lite-on brand.

I do seem to remember lost of access to the CD drive in one OS a few
years
ago. But I believe that was Windows 98 SE that happened on.

I have never had those kind of problems in Window XP or Windows Media
Center
2005.

this is my second reply to your last post so I hope you read them both.
I
just went into Windows XP Hardware newsgroups and found this which is
over
a
year old. But none the less it describes much of what is happeneing to
me...the fact that some DVD's when inserted, changed the descriptor on
the
drive to CD Drive...those are the ones that have the problems. The
people
in
this post have removed their drives, replaced them put them in other
PC's
where they worked fine and have concluded it is a software problem or a
registry problem One person bought 2 new hard drives and neither
worked
in
his PC but did in others as did his original. Anyway unfortunately no
one
ever came up with a true solution. Just thot you mite be interested...

If your mpeg2 decoder is OK and you can play Live TV, the only thing
left
is
something wrong with the DVD drive itself.

The fact that you can play the same DVD on another player and
computer,
kind
of means the DVD drive in your computer has problems.

You really can not trust windows to tell you if the drive is 100% OK,
Windows just tests if it can talk to the drive. Windows does not
really
diagnose if the drive can read a cd/dvd.

Nero Burning software can test a DVD.

Yeah but the drive works for many DVD's which is what is weird.
I
was
also
able to write to one the other day. The drive troubleshooter
says
the
device
is working properly but we know that is not true.

The only other idea, I have is the drive itself may have
developed
a
problem, in which case you would have to replace the drive.

Without some real diagnostics, it would be hard to determine if
that
is
the
problem.
You could just try a new drive and see what happens.

If you don't have access of another drive, that would require
you
to
buy
another drive, which you may not want to do on a limited budget.

You could take the computer to a computer shop for a price and
get
the
verdict.

The decoder for playing commercial DVD's is the same one for
LiveTV.

I only saw the last couple of posts, now that I read your OP,
I
see
that
it
is not commercial DVD's that you are having problems with,
but
ones
you
have
created.

Are you using the same type of media you have always used
(DVD-R/DVD+R/Dual
Layer DVD/etc)?
Perhaps your 2004 system can't read some DVD types that your
laptop
can.

Are you creating the DVD's on the MCE 2004 system or the
laptop?

Have you upgraded/changed some other authoring software in
the
last
6
months
(or since the problem began).

There is no reason that Divx decoder, MP4, Xvid, etc.
can't
all
coexist
nicely. Divx is a popular encoder used for many videos
found
on
the
web,
so
you will probably need that at some point.

You can download the decoder from nVidia for a free 30-day
trial
to
see
if
that works, that one is $20 to keep and it is one many
people
seem
to
like.
If you could view DVD's before and could use the TV
functions,
then
a
decoder was included with your system, you might check to
see
if
you
can
reload from discs that came with your PC

When you ran the checkup utility, did it show the
Intervideo
video
decoder
as compatible and preferred?

I'm a

afraid

the

in
the

in

files.
I
