Ah okay I have not changed anything....I am tryng to play back DVD's that
were created on my Desktop using WMM and Sonic to write to the DVD. I used
to be able to play them on my Desktop. Now the other day I used WMM and
Sonic to make a new one ON THE DESKTOP and cud not play it back on the
desktop....but cud on my laptop. I did prior to this problem load a DIVX
codec so I cud read .avi files in WMM and since that time have had this
problem. And I did delete the divx stuff but the problem still exists. Once
again I can play back movie DVD's and some older ones I had made but not any
of my more recent ones including the one I made the other day....hence my
confusion

If you can play LiveTV, then you don't have a problem with the mpeg decoder..
The decoder for playing commercial DVD's is the same one for LiveTV.
I only saw the last couple of posts, now that I read your OP, I see that it
is not commercial DVD's that you are having problems with, but ones you have
created.
Are you using the same type of media you have always used (DVD-R/DVD+R/Dual
Layer DVD/etc)?
Perhaps your 2004 system can't read some DVD types that your laptop can.
Are you creating the DVD's on the MCE 2004 system or the laptop?
Have you upgraded/changed some other authoring software in the last 6 months
(or since the problem began).

have a Sony Vaio it's about 4 or 5 years old. I have no problems with

compatible but not as preferred and says it is not compatible with the
syncrhronization feature of WMP10 and when I check for updates it sends me
to
a Crel website and I have no idea what to select as all of them are for
WMP11
and Media Center 2005 or newer

A DVD/MPEG decoder is needed for LiveTV and playing DVD's, other types of
files require other decoders (CODEC) depending on how they were encoded
There is no reason that Divx decoder, MP4, Xvid, etc. can't all coexist
nicely. Divx is a popular encoder used for many videos found on the web,
so
you will probably need that at some point.
You can download the decoder from nVidia for a free 30-day trial to see
if
that works, that one is $20 to keep and it is one many people seem to
like.
If you could view DVD's before and could use the TV functions, then a
decoder was included with your system, you might check to see if you can
reload from discs that came with your PC
When you ran the checkup utility, did it show the Intervideo video
decoder
as compatible and preferred?

Will I have to remove anything when I download these? Did you see what
I
wrote about DIVX?

Yes, they all cost money.
Unless you get one bundled with a Video Card that cost me $102.
PowerDVD SE is only $14.95.

I looked at what you said and they all cost money right? I'm a
little
afraid
to load anything cuz that's what I believe started the problem in
the
first
place....I had loaded the DIVX codec so I could read in .avi files.
I
have
since removed that but the problem still exists

You might try some other MPEG2 decoder.
There is a list of available decoders here:

I use the CyberLink PowerDVD one.
Mine came bundled with a new Video Card.

This just started happening. I have Windows Media Center
edition
2004.
I
can play DVD movies and older movies I created using Windows
Movie
Maker
and
then writing using Sonic. But when I put any newer movies I
made
back
in
Feb
2008 I get the following error "Disk is not formatted"
Windows
cannot
read
from this dish. THe disk might be corruspted or it could be
using a
format
that is not compatible with Windows" Today I created a DVD
using
WMM
and
Sonic. I can play it on my laptop DVD drive but not on my
desktop
DVD
drive
where I just created it! I get the same error listed above

I would guess that the DVD decoder is wrong or changed in some
way.
You can check with Microsoft's Decoder check utility for Window
Media
Center
(should work with Media Center 2004)..
