re-installing

I had to reformat my hard drive for a Sony Vaio Computor/ it didn't come with
a recovery cd & there are none available since I purchased in 2004/ I have
the windows product code on the back of my computor/ can I get a windows home
edition somewhere & use my code? do I have to purchase this?
