I would hope that Microsoft updates the Extender bits for MCE2005 (or
publishes a workaround of some sort).
I'll followup and see what I can find out.

I see. Thanks, you helped me narrow down the problem. Had no idea what
could
have caused the issue. No luck in resolving the issue on your side either
huh?
I tried Uninstalling SP3 but got this error "windows hard error", it
completely froze the GUI and I had to restart.
I also download the roll update 2.exe and extracted it, then tried
manually
installing the hotfix KB895961. No luck, windows says "setup has detected
that the service pack version of this system is newer than the update you
are
applying. there is no need to install this update."
Searched to see if there was possibly a SP3 cleanup program, but of course
not. Too new.
Guess Ill have to wait for a fix in windows update or something...

Sounds like you installed SP3 on MCE2005 (with UR2).
I'm having the same issue too FWIW.
As for your computer showing MCE2002 in the System Control Panel, that is
normal.
See here for details.
What version of Media Center do you have?

I'm having a problem with my Media Center Extender software. I've had
the
software installed and working properly before, however, one day my 360
stopped communicating with my computer entirely. I've tried
uninstalling
and
re-installing all .Net framework versions, and resetting my windows
media
center Identity . After uninstalling the media center extender I'm not
able
to re-install it. I get an error message as follows:
"There is a problem with the installation of windows XP Media Center
Edition
2005. Uninstall the update to MCE 2005 and then re-install the update
from
the windows update website. Then run windows media center extender
again."
I am not able to uninstall roll update 2 and re-install it, if that is
in
fact the update being referred to in this error message.
Here's some other random info that could possibly be connected to the
problem, but I can't figure out how:
On other boards I've heard people ask posters with my similar problem
if I
am missing the hotfix KB895961. I am in fact missing this. Also, under
the
system properties of my computer, it lists my media center version as
"2002",
when in fact I'm really using 2005. I'm positive my MC version has been
displayed as 2005 previously, I don't know why it changed. I've tried
using
Ident Reset and it will not fix this.
Any suggestions? I'm pretty computer savvy, and this one has stumped me
entirely.
