no audio after switch from Vista to XP

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Recently reverted from Vista to XP MC. All is working fine, but yesterday
wanted to play an mwv and discovered there is no audio. There is no volume
control icon in the taskbar at bottom right, either. Windows beeps are
working so the speakers are fine. Any idea what may be going on?
