Re: Help me understand media extenders and windows home servers?

Well, I'm certain that many more people with much more expertise than me will chime in. But here's my firsthand knowledge.

The home server is just that -- it's a server that *stores* your media -- whether video, tv, music, photos (or anything else you want to *share* on your server. It does not have a tuner and will not record for you. It is a Windows Server 2003-based product with a nifty front end.

What you need is a media center computer (I prefer Vista) with a tuner. You will then need to decide what type of tuner you want -- over the air, cable or digital cable, and then how many tuners. For each simultaneous recording or live viewing, you need 1 tuner. I have 2 digital cable tuners and 1 over the air tuner in my system so I can potentially watch/record 3 shows at once, plus a "limitless" number of recorded shows can be watched at once.

Then you need to decide where you want to watch those. If you're happy watching them on you computer, you don't need anything else. If what you want is a to record on your computer, but watch on a tv in another room, you need an extender. I currently have XBox 360's and a Linksys DMA2100 media extender. This configuration works great as I can watch any shows recorded on my Media Center computer and watch them virtually anywhere else in my house (assuming I have network capabilities in that part of my house).

I hope this helps. As I said, I'm sure that many more people have more that they can help with. This is just my take on it.

Having said that... I'm trying to wrap my head around
all the dizzying options now days.

One thing that does interest me is somehow using my C
as a TV "recorder".... so can watch programs at later

I was reading abt this device.. an HP windows home

Does this unit actually have TV tuners in it and can be
hooked up to a TV to watch the programming? Can it be
used as an "only" PC or must it be used in conjunction
with other PCs on a network?

and... what exactly do "media centers" connected to my
TV give me the ability to do?

Bottom line...can someone give me a laymen's education
on how to buying "system" vs just a "computer?
Something that gives me a "future"?
