The behavior you are describing is normal behavior for the FAT32 format. Are
you certain the format is NTFS?

I have a 160 GB Verbatim external hard drive formatted NTFS. The Backup
utility doesn't seem to recognize it, and when I 'force' it by browsing to
the drive letter it will only accept 4GB. I can use the back up utility
to
my "c" drive successfully, but cannot then copy the 20 GB bkup to the
external drive, getting msg that the (empty) drive doesn't have enough
room.
Is this something inherent in the backup utility or am I not holding my
lip
right? Thanks in advance for your time and attention.
