Those type of videos and music are many times streaming media, normally they are sent and deleted from your system as viewed. This might be done for copyright reasons or to force you back to the site to view it again (and their ads).
At some sites, you have the option to view or download and sometimes (depending on the media format), your can right-click and choose Save Target to download as a file, rather than just viewing. Occasionally if you check your Internet Cache, you will find them residing there as temp files, but usually that isn't the case.
There are several 3rd party apps around you may be able to use, here's a couple of links to try.

Forgive me for not being more explicit. I assumed it would be understood that we are trying to capture internet content. Most players have the ability to record or 'rip' computer content, but our question refers to internet content available through news stories, YouTube, or other similar content..
Thanks

Do you mean media from the internet?

We want to save it to our hard disk for later enjoyment or for emailing. Other programs allow the user to record, or 'capture' (if you prefer), video and sound as it is being played by the player and saved to disk.
Thanks

If you mean TV shows, yes with a tuner install, Media Center can record TV content, it can play FM radio as well, but does not have a record function for radio.
