Crystal,
This isn't true. You can buy MCE 2005 online at any number of retailers. Newegg.com is one such. MS originally released it as an OEM or "system builder" product. And about a year or so ago, MS changed the definition of a "system builder". If you build the PC and install the OS, you're a system builder. You of course have to provide all your own "free" support, and you'll have to pay if you call MS, but.............

Hi IceMage / Scott,
It's good to read that someone else thought I could request for a copy of
the Original Windows XP CD from the shop I purchased it from. Unfortunately,
like I mentioned, Microsoft never released Media Centre OS to the public to
purchase, it was only sold as preinstalled on new machines. There is no
Media Centre OS Installation CD that can be purchased as far as I can gather.
I presume that everyone else in this forum use Media Centre as it was
preinstalled or it is part of Vista OS?
I did go to the manufacturer of my laptop - HP, to request help. It's not
Microsoft's issue since I purchased my laptop with the OS Software as part of
the package, so its my laptop's manufacturer's issue to help. However, HP
sees it as a software issue and said that there is nothing that they can do
apart from advise me to reformat.
The terrible thing is, I realise after researching on the Internet, this
error message, although not very common, can be repaired with the
Installation CD ROM as a 'Refresh Repair Reinstall'. All I got from HP is
that I never made a Recovery CD so it's my issue, but I thought a Recovery CD
is not the same as an Installation CD, hence why I can use the F11 key to
reformat without the need of any CD.
The people online who have the same error message must be those with an
original Installation CD, like I had one when I had WinXP Home Edition
before I got Media Edition.
It has taken me while to understand the distinction between Reinstall and
Reformat, but these terms are used interchangably by HP advisors.
Scott, can I ask if you have seen this problem fixed before, which Windows
OS has this worked with and do you have any idea the reason to what I may
have done for this to have happened?
Thanks for replying to my question.

If you purchased the computer from an OEM (Dell, HP, Gateway, ETC.) they
often include the Original Windows XP CD with your computer, except it will
appear as if the disc were any one of the other discs that comes with your
computer. If you still have those CDs, go through them again carefully to be
sure that you don't have it, if you DO NOT have a disc, then you should be
able to ask whoever you purchased your computer from for a disc...
Then you can follow Doug's instructions, and I can verify that this will fix
the problem, I've seen it before.
