Re: Recording from a VCR through Windows Vista Media center

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I actually have the VCR hooked up as you describe (channel 3 output). The
good news is that I had been able to successfully record from my VCR to the
hard drive quite a few times prior to my post. The bad news is that with no
rhyme or reason it will not let me record doing the same exact thing within
the same windows session. For instance, I just recorded from the VCR two
separate times successfully - each time I manually stopped the recording.
When I tried recording the third time I got a message stating "No TV signal
on channel 3..... so manual recording could not be recorded...." This is the
error message I get 95% of the time - and once I get it I can't record from
the VCR again no matter what I try. By the way if I go back to recording
regular TV (even through the VCR) it will in fact record.
Your post was helpful in letting me know it is in fact hooked up correctly.
Do you know why I am getting this error message and problem? Thanks in
advance.

I had previously hooked up to the composite inputs (s video in using the
yellow converter plug provided and the audio in (white and red composite
connectors) but was unsuccessful of course. Your other solution regarding
setting up as a set top box is much appreciated. In that solution are you
saying you need to hook up that little IR device that plugs into the
rectangular shaped IR receiver? Also, are you saying you need to hook up the
line in (blue color in my case) in place of the audio in (white, red)
composite? Or can you hook up all three composite (yellow, white and red)?

Hopefully you can help me stay hooked up the first way (RF coax hookup) and
solve that problem. Again thanks for your help!!!

Can someone tell me how you record old VHS (analog) tapes through Media
Center using the TV tuner? Ultimately I would like to burn them to DVDs.

Please help. Thanks

If you have the Analog tuner setup, and have a Channel 3 or Channel 4, you
can hook the VCR RF output (TV out) to the Tuner input and record as if you
were recording Channel 3 or 4 TV.

VCRs will output Channel 3 or Channel 4 (usually a switch on back to select
the channel).

Otherwise you can record using the Video and Audio inputs, however, MCE
requires that you have the IR hardware whether you use it or not.

You have to setup MCE for a Set top box in order to get the video and audio
on Composite input and line in on the sound card.
