Re: Recording analog TV shows

Hey Jaime,

thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately, I am working with a analog signal, so I do not know if it
will work with the way you desribe it. I do have DVB (digital video), but the
decoder will not be near the computer.

I am interested in you mentioning that you can allways shrink the video
file. Is this very easy with media center, just like shrinking the size of a
photo?
Because in the past I have heard people needing to use special video editing
programs that required enormous amount of hard disk space.
If you choose the highest setting, how large is a 1 hour show approximately?

Yes, on all accounts.

Assuming you have everything set up correctly, Media Center is just like
Tivo, you go through the guide, find the program and click Record (much
easier than a VCR). you can record single show or series with various
options (all occurrences, first run, etc.). If you have more than one tuner,
you can record more than one show at a time.

There are several quality setting for recording, you would need to try them
to see what you find acceptable. Personally, I record everything at the best
setting as hard drive space is cheap; I can always shrink the program, but I
can't make it better at a later time.

Thx Chuck,

Can you you tell me a little bit more about the recording capabilities of
the Windows vista media center.

I would like to know if it has the capabilty to set up multiple timers.
With
that I mean that media center will record multiple pre-programmed TV
shows
on various dates and times.
For example, I want simultaneously that media center will record TV show 1
tomorrow at 20:00, TV show B next week at 16:00, TV show 3 everyday at
18:00
and TV show 4 every monday at 15:00.
Please not that these are all on different channels. Can media center cope
with this, or is it pretty "dumb" that I have to manual set the time,
channel, and press manually on record when a show begins.
I can do all this programming simply with my VCR, and would like to know
if
media center can do this as well.

Also, I would like to ask if in media center I can set in which quality
and
size I want a TV show to be recorded in. If possible I want an 1 hour show
to
be approximaltey be around 500MB. And would the quality be comparable with
the quality of a videotape?

Hey,

I am at the point of buying a new Windows Vista desktop computer, but
do
not
know what kind of. It must be well at mulit tasking. With that I mean
that
I
will have several programmes/windows simultaneously running and switch
between them. For example download music/small films, running MS Word,
Windows Explorer, and several Internet windows.

Besides that I want to record TV programs to watch on a suitable
moment,
without the hassle of videotapes. It is a lot of work to categorize
everything.

I was thinking of 2 options: 1 buy a powerful computer and record TV
shows
on it’s hard disk/drive (HD) or 2 buy a stand alone HD-video recorder
to
record TV shows and a moderate computer for the other multi tasks.

I do not have any experience yet with recording or editing TV
shows/video
on
a computer. What would you recommend to do?
Buy a powerful computer which can record TV shows and everything else?
If
so, what kind of specifications would you choose then? Do I need a
powerful
video card for compressing/conversion the recorded TV show to a smaller
size
(500MB per hour recording)? How large does the hard disk has be? I have
now
something of 600 hours TV shows on videotapes. In future I think the
amount
will be still the same. I have heard that video conversion requires a
lot
of
memory. With video conversion I mean that I want to reduce a recorded
TV
show
to a size of around 500MB per 1 hour video. I see sometimes films of
approximately 2 hours which fit on 700MB cd’s. Or can I set the size
before
recording?

Or would you rather choose to buy a stand alone HD-video recorder for
recording the TV shows and an average computer for the other tasks? It
is
then important that the HD recorder has a USB connection to transfer
recorded
TV shows to my laptop. This for 2 reasons. First is that the recording
capacity is often limited of this kind of apparatus and I want be able
store
it on separate HD's, since I have around 600 hours of video content.
And
secondly is that I want be able to play the TV shows on my laptop on
any
computer in the house. This way I can let the HD recorder record
something
and simultaneously watch an earlier recorded program on any TV in the
house
through my laptop.
I have seen nice looking stand alone HD video recorders from brands
like
Sony and Philips, but they don’t have an USB connection. I have seen
external
stand alone hard disk with multi media playback, but I do not know any
that
can also record TV shows.

I hope anyone can give me some advice.

Grt,
M
