What you have is a managed switch which is going to take some reading and
software downloads to get it setup properly on your network. Here's a good
place to start.

It would be a lot simpler to use another less feature packed switch on your
network. While you may have gotten a killer close out price on this switch
it isn't what you need unless you have serious networking skills.

currently I have a wrt54g with 4 lan ports. The vista media center and
xbox 360 are both plugged into that switch and everything works as it
should. however, I am in need of more ports so I purchased a 24 port
switch (3com 3226) and plugged all my computers into that, including
the xbox 360. Then I connect the wrt54g to the 24 port switch. all the
computers can get to the internet fine, xbox live, etc. All the PCs
(Vista and linux) can see eachother fine. But, the xbox 360 cannot
connect to media center. I try resetting up the connection, enter the
pin, etc. but it can never get through the steps and errors out.
Obviously pinging won't work so I view the network map in vista and I
see the xbox 360. It does have a valid ip address as it can get to
xbox live and download content but I'll de damned if it can connect
with my media center. Media extender found pops up telling me its
there but try to set it up, same thing, fails at step 2. Take the
media center cable and xbox cable and put them into the wrt54g switch
and boom works. Put them in any other switch I have, netgear 8 port,
or this 3com, and it does not work. Why does just the xbox 360 not
like these other switches, but the 5 other pcs don't have any issue?

Its a managed switch, but in its default state its just layer 2 with a
web interface, nothing special. That's why the xbox can get to the
internet just fine when plugged into it, it just cannot "see" the
media center computer so that's not the problem. Thanks anyways,
.
