Re: Added 1GB of RAM; WinXP Media Center asked for Activation?!

No, no other upgrades. I had activated WinXP after a crash (and
reinstallation), at which time I upgraded also the video card. Everything was
good for 2wks, and then I decided to add 1GB of RAM into one of the 256x2 MB
RAM slots (as game performance was sloppy on some intensive games). As soon
as I plugged the 1GB and rebooted the PC, I was asked to reactive WinXP.

I'd have to agree that it can be a pain sometimes, but such is life with
Microsoft.
A RAM upgrade by itself I wouldn't think would trigger it, were there any
previous upgrades done to the system?

Thanks for your response, and I would have to call, eventually.
Please explain to me, though, why does addition of RAM require
reactivation
of WinXP? Changing a CPU or other major component that could compromise
tracking of licensing compliance is one thing, making the user's life
difficult for a simple RAM upgrade is plain silly. What's next, have
periodic
updates for video card installation? Driver updates? Why not revalidate
the
OS license during Firefox installation? I know I'm exagerating but you get
my
drift...

Hardware changes are cumulative, if you changed other hardware in the
past,
the RAM may have been the "straw that broke the camel's back".

Why, oh why, would WinXP Media Center version ask for reactivation of
Windows
license since "hardware has significantly changed since last time
Windows
was
activated?" That's the whole purpose of adding peripherals or
upgrading
one's PC!! When I tried to enter the Product Key code for my PC, I got
the
message back that this Windows licence has been activated too many
times
(yeah, I've upgraded my computer a couple of times already, and
recovered
from a serious crash last year).
Why would one need to call Activation Support for something so basic as
upgrading RAM? This is ridiculous! With a busy professional life and
2
small kids at home, does Microsoft think I have time to spend 30'-60'
on
the
phone until I can get this resolved with someone?!
I'm getting close to switching to an Apple platform. The Intel chipset,
virtualization, and MS Office availability make this a smart choice
these
days...
