The retail package comes in a blue box with a folder inside, OEM is just a piece of cardboard with a pamphlet in shrink wrap.
If the hard drive isn't showing up, you need to use the F6 option (watch the bottom of the screen when booting from CD) and provide them, but you need a floppy to provide them or create a custom install CD. HP has the drivers on their website.

Thanks for your response and apologies for posting in the wrong place - I
followed the link for XP on the forum homepage and this is where I ended up.
The package says Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 - I
purchased it at a listed authorized MS retailer. I don't know about OEM or
what-have-you but it was full retail price. I intended a clean install -
since the validation failed I didn't think an upgrade would be possible. I
was taken by surprise when the message about upgrades came up and thought it
meant once installed I wouldn't be able to upgrade further (fine with me).

This is the Windows Media Center group, your question would be more on topic
in one of the XP groups.
But anywho, which version of Pro did you buy, OEM, retail full, upgrade? Are
you trying to do an upgrade type install or a clean install, looks like an
upgrade type from what you said. Are you booting from the Pro CD or starting
the install from within Windows?
