Re: DVI + Audio -> HDMI

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Thank you JW. This makes sense. I just didn't know if there was a way for TV
to tell if this was a connection from a PC or a different device. From
reading the manual, it seemed it would know and blank out the screen. I will
make sure I use proper screen resolution and use a video card that support
the proper resolution.

Thanks again.

The TV has no idea where the HDMI video is coming from so as long as a PC
meets the HDMI standards just the same as the cable, satellite and DVD
players do it will work fine.
Do read your TV user's manual to insure that you are sending a resolution
over the DVI/HDMI interface that it will accept. Most HDTVs put a message
like the one you found in their manual since the TV will not accept
standard PC resolutions such as 800x600, 1024x768, etc over HDMI or DVI.

Thank you CSM1. I understand there are certain laws out there for a lot
of HD content. What I am confused about if that what does that have to do
with connecting my PC to my TV via HDMI port. If I simply want to see my
pictures or surf the net, can I not do that using my PC and HDMI
connection? I do understand that for me to play HD content all components
in the chain must adhere to a certain standard.

Also, in future, if I have Blu-ray or HD-DVD drive, HDCP compatible video
card, I think I will be legal to play HD content. Am I missing something
else? I am not trying to infringe on any copy righted material.

BTW: I do not play on having any TV-Card or time shifting etc in this PC.
Simply a player and a web surfing machine.

Thanks.

Then you are under the laws of the European Union.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_directive_on_copyright

In the UK, you have this.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_and_Related_Rights_Regulations_2003

There are some basic protections for Digital TV.

If your computer has American software, (Windows Vista or Windows Media
Center 2005) you very likely have the DRM giving you trouble.

Since you are in the UK you should check with the Techs in the UK.

I am so very confused. I will be using this system in the UK and not in
the US. The excerpt I listed in my previous email was related to a TV
set from a UK model.

What I am wondering is if I should be able to do this or if they are
blocking it technically. My primary goal for this PC is to be able to
play any stored media from my PC, play any PC games etc, play DVDs and
evantually perhaps play Blu-Ray (when I can afford it) etc. I can do
all of this using VGA port but I rather go for higher quality since my
system and TV is suppose to support it.

Having said all of that, I am planning to get a new 50"+ LCD soon and
wanted to make sure I get what I really need.

Thank you.

Following is directly out of the TV manual. It is saying do not
connect a PC on the HDMI port. What gives?

It is the result of the Digital Millennium Copyright act of 1998.

HDMI IN 1, HDMI IN 2
? Connect to the HDMI jack of a device with HDMI output. These inputs
can also be used as a DVI connection with separate analog audio
inputs. An optional HDMI/DVI cable will be necessary to make this
connection. When using the optional HDMI/DVI adapter, the DVI analog
audio inputs on your TV allow you to receive left and right audio
from your DVI device. (Not compatible with PC)

? When connecting this product via HDMI or DVI to a Set Top Box, DVD
Player or Games Console etc, make sure that it has been set to a
compatible video output mode as shown in the table below. Failure to
observe this may result in picture distortion, image breakup or no
picture.

? Do not attempt to connect the HDMI/DVI connector to a PC or Laptop
Graphics Card. (This will result in a blank screen being displayed)

DVI IN (HDMI 2) AUDIO L/R
DVI audio outputs for external devices.

Hi,

My TV has a VGA port as well as two HDMI ports. My PC that is
connected to this TV has two DVI ports. Currently I use a
DVI-to-VGA converter and connect my PC to my TV. I am thinking
about getting a DVI-to-HDMI cable so that I do not perform any
digital to analog conversions and lose quality. All seems well
except that my sound will no longer work since my PC's sound is
connected to a port next to VGA port and gets activated only when
I change the TV to VGA mode.

Is there an easy/cost effective method to get sound incorporate
into this setup and create a HDMI signal from DVI + Sound Card? I
really would like not to lose much quality (doing conversions) and
the girth of my skinny wallet if possible.

:-)

Thank you.

You should check your TVs documentation.

Some TVs with a HDMI connection and get their audio from audio jacks
on another Port.
I have a Sanyo that gets its HDMI audio from video input 3 which is
another component input.

So I have a DVI-D to HDMI cable with the line out on the sound card
connected to the audio in on Video 3.
