RE: Vista Media Center Problem: can only receive 2 cable channels

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I have the reverse problem. With basic cable, channels 5 and 6 have no
sound. All the other channels work fine. There must be something
different about those two channels. I suspect they are tuned to a slightly
different frequency than what they are supposed to be, according to the
'official' FCC guide. My ATI card comes with a frequency scan mode in the
Catalyst Media Center, and they do come in fine with that - unfortunately
that utility leaves me with thousands of mostly static channels to edit, and
I dislike the Catalyst GUI. Windows Media Center (2005) is a much friendlier
interface, but will not tune into those two channels correctly. Please post
if you have learned anything new about this problem!

Any help offered will be greatly appreciated. I've already exhausted all
available resources. HP tech support proved to be little help as well.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium on a HP Pavilion m8100y with Hauppauge
WinTV HVR 1800 and NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT.

I've gone through the automated and manual configure process in Windows
Media Center and have been unsuccessful in getting the TV signal recongzined.
The automated set-up process resulted in the Media Center not recognizing a
video signal (message: "Windows Media Center is unable to determine your TV
signal configuration . . . "). The manual process resulted in reception of
only channels 5 and 6 (manually scrolling through the other channels resulted
in no picture or sound)

Note:

- I downloaded the Hauppauge Win-TV application version 6 and I was able to
get all of the channels, but of course it was outside of Windows Media
Center. So the Tuner card does work.

- I've confirmed that the TV signal should work because I am able to
receive 80+ channels on my circa 1998 Sony television via the same input
(without set-top box).

- I have since had the PC replaced (hp pavilion m1800y) upon the
recommendation of HP. However, the PC is experiencing the same problem: I am
only getting channels 5 and 6 through Media Center.

Thank you in advance for your help.
